German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier

On the morning of the 25th German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Kyiv to begin his visit to Ukraine. The visit was originally scheduled for the 20th, but was postponed for security reasons.

Later in the day, Steinmeier will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This is Steinmeier’s third attempt to visit Ukraine. As early as mid-April, Steinmeier planned to travel to Kyiv with the presidents of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, but Ukraine refused Steinmeier Germany’s visit was seen as an unprecedented diplomatic and political insult. The situation did not ease until early May, after the presidents of the two countries spoke on the phone.

On the 19th, the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and the security department jointly recommended that Steinmeier postpone the visit originally scheduled on the 20th for security reasons.
