December 15 The United Nations Security Council issued a media statement on the 15th, condemning the attack on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The attack in southern Lebanon on the night of the 14th killed an Irish peacekeeper and injured three other Irish peacekeepers, one of them seriously.

The statement said the members of the Security Council condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms”, expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and Ireland, and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. Council members urged the Government of Lebanon, with the assistance of UNIFIL, to promptly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Earlier on the 15th, the spokesperson of the United Nations, Secretary-General Guterres, Dujarric, also issued a statement saying that Guterres was deeply saddened by the loss of the Irish peacekeeper and urged the relevant authorities to quickly find out the truth of the incident and hold them accountable.
