At least three people have been killed and five injured as a result of a shooting at a university in the US state of Michigan.
The British news agency Reuters, citing local media, said that the incident took place on Monday night.
Police say the attacker managed to escape after the shooting and is being sought.
The official Twitter handle of the University Police has been informed that firing took place at two locations, including the academic building and the sports building.
The Detroit News, citing a university spokeswoman, confirmed the three deaths in its report.
On behalf of the university administration, it has been said on Twitter that the injured have been shifted to the hospital.
The police have declared all the buildings at the university clear after the incident.
The assailant was a short man who was wearing a mask. It is believed that he escaped on foot.
Police have urged residents of residential areas around the university to keep their doors locked and stay in safe places.
“The search for the suspected assailant is ongoing.”
Michigan State University is a major educational institution in the United States where thousands of students are enrolled.
After the incident, the police have issued instructions to the administration to suspend all classes for the next 48 hours.
The incident comes nearly 14 months after the Oxford High School shooting.
On November 30, 2021, a 15-year-old student opened fire in the school with an automatic pistol, killing four of his classmates while injuring six students and a teacher.
Oxford High School is approximately 80 miles from the University of Michigan
