Oldest newspaper

The world’s oldest newspaper, which has been published for three centuries, has announced that it will stop publication.

According to foreign media reports, the Austrian newspaper Wiener Zeitung started publishing under government patronage in 1703. The newspaper, which has been published for three centuries, announced the official closure of the institution in its Thursday edition.

According to Arab media, the year of publication (1703) and the year of completion (2023) are printed on the cover of the edition. The decision to close the newspaper has been made in connection with the introduction of a bill to close state-owned newspapers in the Austrian Parliament.

In the bill, it is recommended to digitise government newspapers and turn them into training centres for new journalists.

Pending the passage of the parliament bill, the world’s oldest newspaper will continue to be published in paper form until June 30, 2023.
